Communities across North Dakota are receiving a significant boost through the Destination Development Grant Program, as the North Dakota Department of Commerce recently awarded $4 million to support tourism growth, destination development, and local economic development projects throughout the state.

The 2026 grant cycle attracted 103 applications from 61 communities, demonstrating strong statewide interest in developing new visitor experiences, expanding attractions, and enhancing local amenities that support economic growth. Projects were evaluated based on their ability to attract new visitors, encourage longer stays, and create measurable economic impact for local communities.

Funded projects include a diverse range of initiatives, from agritourism and heritage tourism to lodging development and recreational experiences. Recipients include projects in Sterling, Williston, Mountain, Casselton, Bismarck, Bowman, and Lakota. Investments will support new lodging opportunities, event venues, tourism attractions, heritage centers, outdoor recreation experiences, and visitor amenities designed to strengthen local economies and showcase the unique character of North Dakota communities.

According to Commerce Tourism and Marketing Director Sara Otte Coleman, these investments help communities expand visitor experiences, fill gaps in tourism offerings, and showcase the authentic character of North Dakota. The program reflects the state’s continued commitment to leveraging tourism as a driver of economic diversification and community development.

As communities continue to seek innovative ways to attract visitors, support local businesses, and enhance quality of life, the Destination Development Grant Program demonstrates how strategic investments can create lasting benefits for both residents and visitors alike.
